Must-visit parks and green spaces in London

If there’s one thing London does well, it’s green spaces. And we’re not just talking about Royal Parks. With over 3,000 green spaces across the city, London is a vast oasis of gardens, nature reserves, wetlands, and woodlands – boasting more trees, flowers, and greenways than many major cities combined. Exploring them all is no small feat, but that’s part of the charm: London’s green spaces are never far away.

For international students studying here, or visitors on business, London’s parks and gardens offer the perfect spots to relax, recharge, or meet new people. Many are also great places to study or get some fresh air between classes – especially when the weather is kind.

Here are nine great green spaces to discover in London:

Regent’s Park

Nestled between Camden and Marylebone, Regent’s Park is one of London’s largest and most popular Royal Parks – a must-visit if you’re nearby. Spanning 400 acres, it offers a mix of manicured gardens, open lawns, and tree-lined paths, perfect for a study break or weekend stroll. Highlights include a boating lake, the beautiful Queen Mary’s Rose Garden, and London Zoo. There’s even an open-air theatre, making it a vibrant spot to unwind.

Lincoln’s Inn Fields

A favourite among LSE students, Lincoln’s Inn Fields is a rare green gem in London’s legal district. Close to Holborn and the Strand, it offers wide lawns, tennis courts, and plenty of benches –  ideal for sunny lunches or quick study breaks. A well-loved escape for both students and professionals nearby.

Holland Park

A strong contender for London’s prettiest park, Holland Park – located in Kensington – is a picturesque retreat of gardens and woodlands with a peaceful, intimate feel. At its heart lies the stunning Kyoto Garden: a Japanese landscape garden with waterfalls and peacocks. And, just along from it, a beautiful Dutch Garden, with vibrant flowers and striking architectural features.

Hyde Park

World-famous Hyde Park truly has something for everyone. Whether you want a quiet spot to read, a lively place to meet friends, or space to cycle and picnic, it’s all here. You’ll find a large boating lake, art galleries, and plenty of events throughout the year. Highlights include the Serpentine Lake, Diana Memorial Fountain, and the iconic Speaker’s Corner, where you can hear public debates and speeches.

Green Park

A peaceful retreat in the heart of the city, Green Park trades grandeur for calm and keeps things simple. No lakes, no flowerbeds – just open grass and cosy tree-lined paths. While close to Piccadilly and Buckingham Palace, it can feel a world away on a quiet day, yet remains charming when things get busy. Popular with lunch-breakers and sightseers alike, it’s a go-to spot for a bit of peace without leaving the city.

Bloomsbury Square

Small but full of character, Bloomsbury Square has been a quiet refuge for centuries. Once a favourite with writers and thinkers, it remains a calm oasis popular with students, locals, and visitors. Perfect for a peaceful lunch or a moment of inspiration between studies.

Russell Square

Just a short walk from Bloomsbury Square lies another tidy and peaceful garden space – Russell Square. With its shady trees and a charming central fountain, it’s another favourite with students and office workers seeking a calm break from the city buzz.

Tavistock Square

Also close by, and similar to the other squares mentioned, is Tavistock Square: a thoughtful, tranquil spot known for its memorials and meditative atmosphere. Surrounded by academic buildings, it’s a great place to reflect, read, or get some peace away from city noise.

Postman’s Park

After a green haven in the City of London? Postman’s Park may be modest in size, but this hidden gem offers a rare pocket of peace amid the financial district’s fast pace – ideal for a quiet pause or a moment of reflection. For more info on the area, read our City of London blog post.
